How these rankings work
Teams are ordered by Elo, the same opponent-aware rating engine used by our game model. Wins and losses move a team's rating according to opponent strength, home field and margin of victory. These rankings use results only.
Ratings begin at 1,500 in 1999 and include prior postseason results. Each offseason removes one-third of the distance from 1,500. The fixed update settings are K = 20 and 60 Elo points for home field, with a diminishing margin-of-victory multiplier. All regular-season results through Week 2 enter this edition. Earlier-season results still matter; roster changes and current injuries are not separate adjustments. Elo is a strength estimate, not a win probability.
Movement compares this method at consecutive completed-week cutoffs using the same source release. Earlier editions generated in this run are reconstructed, not claimed as previously published rankings. Historical data corrections can change that reconstruction. Ties in the underlying score use alphabetical team abbreviation order.
