How these rankings work
Offensive line: equal weight on sack avoidance and short rushing gains, each standardized across the league. The ranking smooths sack rate with 100 league-average dropbacks and short rushing gains with 50 league-average runs. “Short rush yards” caps each carry's gain at five yards and retains losses, reducing the impact of long runs. Runs stopped means carries gaining zero or fewer yards; this is supporting context, not a third score component.
Defense: lower expected points added (EPA) allowed per play ranks better. EPA measures how much a play changes the offense's expected scoring value. Negative EPA allowed is good for the defense. The ranking adds 100 league-average plays to reduce small-sample noise. The table shows unsmoothed rates. Success allowed is the share of plays with positive offensive EPA; pass and run splits provide context.
Only regular-season pass/run plays count; kneels, spikes, nullified plays and special teams are excluded. Dropbacks include sacks and scrambles. Designed quarterback runs remain in the rushing sample. These are team outcome measures: quarterback decisions, runners, receivers and opponents affect the numbers. Offensive line rankings are a blocking proxy, not individual film grades. Unit rankings are not opponent-adjusted. Early-season movement can be substantial.
Movement compares this method at consecutive completed-week cutoffs using the same source release. Earlier editions generated in this run are reconstructed, not claimed as previously published rankings. Historical data corrections can change that reconstruction. Ties in the underlying score use alphabetical team abbreviation order.
